Ceramic Coating Myths & Truths

Ceramic Coating Myths & Truths

Ceramic Coating Myths & Truths

Ceramic Coatings are extremely popular, however they are often highly misunderstood and can lead to a ton of confusion. Always ask your installer for real world performance, durability questions, and proper maintenance. Here are some common ceramic coating myths and truths!

#1

coatings don’t need maintenance: I never need to wash my car!

Coatings will cut down wash time and effort. Proper technique and tools will ensure your coating’s durability. Your vehicle will get dirty! Coatings are best for people who hand wash and frequently maintain their vehicle

#2

Coatings are permanent: bulletproof surface protection forever!

the effective lifespan greatly varies on maintenance and how often it is brought in for a 6 – 12 month detailing session. Everything has a life expectancy and will breakdown with time.

#3

coatings will chip or peel off

Any good quality coating will not peel off since the layer microscopically bonds properly into surface. When the coating has failed it will simply shed less, bead less, and wear away.

#4

coatings protect against scratches, rock chips, and dents

You need paint protection film for chips and scratches to absorb the brunt of damage. Coatings are sacrificial layers to hard damage like brushing up against paint or very light scratching. Dents can absolutely damage the metal underneath a coating.

#5

I have 7, 9, 10H Diamond Hardness Protection!

Pure marketing that overstates paint hardness. Proper hardness claims are really measured on a pencil hardness scale and shouldn’t translate to a “diamond MOHS” hard surface.

#6

coatings are glossier than sealants or waxes

Dependent on a vehicle’s condition, but shine is all about prep work. What a detailer applies to a vehicle after proper paint correction is the cherry on top.

#7

coatings are chemical resistant

Most coatings are highly resistant to chemicals. However degreasers, solvents, acids, and anything that can etch should always be removed immediately.

#8

coatings are self healing

A very small amount of coatings are self healing and there is a limit to re-healing. PPF is far more common for self healing thick protective layer.

#9

coatings are fire (or graffiti, flame thrower, forcefield, etc) proof

Pure a marketing! Lighter fluid burns at a lower rate and doesn’t take into account friction or uv degradation. The hottest point of a flame is the tip! Nothing is indestructible!

#10

coating warranties represent the lifespan of the product

It’s impossible to measure or understand how long a coating will last. Durability all varies on the maintenance, quality of installation, and paint quality.

#11

never wax my car after a ceramic coating

Always apply a spray booster or nourishing wash solution for your coating. A thick sealant or carnauba wax is not recommended.

#12

Using no soap or never hand washing after a ceramic coating

Using no soap will reduce the longevity and scratch the paint. Do not rinse your vehicle with hard water, will water spots occur!

Coatings Last?

At Liquid Finish we are constantly asked “How long do Coatings Last?” considering the high cost and work involved with a ceramic coating a new vehicle. For a great quick insight watch these two videos that cover a lot of important points:

Warranties do not mean lifespan! Is there an annual topper?

Average, Normal, High Use – There is no expiration date to a coating!

Get a proper professional recommendation and ask a ton of questions!

What is the Effective Lifespan?

Unrealistic expectations: hardness & scratch resistance

Realistic expectations: hydrophobic or self cleaning attributes

Three variables for Ceramic Coatings Longevity:

From my opinion and experience after installing 200+ vehicles, ceramic coating longevity relies on three factors:

1. Vehicle – Usage, Color, and Condition

Does the vehicle drive 3000, 10 000 or 30 000 miles a year? Is it straight black and prone to swirls or scratches from the factory? Is it cheap less durable paint or a luxury high end paint system?  Is the vehicle garaged or left outside un washed?

2. Installation & Ceramic Coating

At the time of installation was the vehicle new with 0-1000 miles, little to no swirls or scratches with fresh paint? Or did the vehicle have 20 000 plus miles? Are there any repainted panels, paint chips, or scratches from 2-3 years of age?

What type of coating was installed? Was it a 1 year, 5 year, or 7 year product?

3. Maintenance

Does the client wash at a minimum monthly with recommended coating spray protectants or enriched wash solutions? Is the vehicle stored correctly and brought into the original detailer for an annual detail? Does the vehicle run through cheap automatic car washes or dangerous hand car washes?

So How Long do Ceramic Coatings Last?

The short answer is it varies on how you maintain the vehicle. Before installation I always ask these three general questions to build a proper package:

  • How long will you own the vehicle? One, two, three or five years? How many miles per year?
  • How will you maintain it? Will you garage the vehicle? Automatic or safe hand wash?
  • Is the vehicle daily driven or is it a weekend warrior? Is it a light or dark color?
  • What do you want the coating to do?

Perform a great installation, care for the coating on a monthly basis, and any coating can last for a long period of time!

Ceramic Coating Warranties

Ceramic Coating Warranties are very debatable and hard to decipher. First read the warranty terms to see exactly what is covered. What’s required to maintain status? Is there an annual detail that requires any boosting products? Most warranty terms are loaded with jargon, just be careful of outlandish claims and realize the warranty is as good as the coating installer

Installer care and a maintenance system is key for longevity. A quality installer can elongate your coating lifespan and recommend the right maintenance products to for durability. Warranties are not an indication of lifespan. Be realistic and have right the expectations!

Fees/Notices

Additional fees may apply for: excessive clutter, biohazard cleaning, excessive dirt, etc. Client will be notified immediately.

Damage
We are not liable for the electronic or mechanical functions of any vehicle, there is very limited exposure from detailing processes that can affect a vehicle.
We care deeply for your vehicle. For any damage to the vehicle please give us a chance to make it right within reason.

Protection Warranty
We cannot guarantee how long wax or protectants last as there is no meter in the world that measures durability.

Waldo
The “Waldo Effect”: It is common as we polish, clean, wax, or work on your vehicle that deeper unseen preexisting flaws may appear such as deep scratches, etching, paint chips, paint marring, and water spots. Ie. A deep scratch in a wear tear spot may become more noticeable post wash process.

Perfection
Perfect cannot be achieved and is a very broad term. Our job is to make your car super shiny with integrity and the desire to make you happy..

BioHazard
Biological hazards including but not limited to blood, urine, feces, vomit, bodily fluid, etc. MUST be disclosed prior to work being started.  Significant additional charges will be applied when dealing with biological contamination post estimate process.

Estimates
Estimates are an educated guess of time, materials, and labor.  Every vehicle and customer presents different variables that we cannot control (pet hair, spills, odors, biohazard, etc.). Vehicles in significantly worse condition than at prior assessment or consultation before appointment will have extra charges.

Services Changes
Changes in time/cost can occur during the detailing process, we will do our best to notify you with estimate of extra work so you can confirm a new process/service item.

Some services cannot do everything for a neglected vehicle. A “Mini Maintenance” is not designed to restore a neglected vehicle. A minor polish service does not take every swirl, etch or defect in the paint.
